CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Naija
CANON: Aquaria
CANON REFERENCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquaria_%28video_game%29
AGE: about 19
GENDER: f
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Swim Coach, Underwater Combat Instructor
APPEARANCE: http://ocremix.org/files/images/games/win/5/aquaria-win-cover-front-57357.jpg
PERSONALITY: Naija's long isolation hasn't made her bitter. In fact because of being deprived of human contact for so long, she has an intense curiosity about most people she meets. Even seemingly mundane details fascinate her: what exactly a 'spoon' is, digital watches, sandwiches, the stock market. Some people may find the intensity of this curiosity a little too much, and if she receives a clear signal that it is, she'll back off. But if not, expect a lot of questions, mixed with tut-tutting about the strangeness of surface dwellers.
Also due to her isolation, she hasn't developed the strong distrust of baseline humans many mutants with visible mutations like hers do. She's likely to respond coolly to mutant supremacy, or any other attempt to carve out mutant-exclusive spaces. This attitude may be a bit naive, and may change as time goes on.
Despite her open friendliness, Naija is in many ways still a wild creature, new to the mores of civilization. This can manifest in ways that are comical: her atrocious table manners, for instance. But it can also manifest in mildly disturbing and frightening ways: having no qualms about chasing down and eating animals alive, territoriality, and a preconscious tendency to resort to violence to solve problems. Naija's not a primitivist, but primal with all the killer instinct that implies. She can be irrationally protective of people and objects she considers 'hers', whether they are in a legal sense at all. She can also be cruel if it amuses her (such as when she laughs at a drowning Li).
Speaking of, Naija is a hoarder. She has an eye constantly open for strange objects. Whatever she sees, she'll probably carry to whatever place she's made into her 'den', which quickly grows crowded. The logic for this is seemingly random too. She has little concept of property either, so she won't care very much if what she's taken is yours. Her logic says that if you didn't want it taken, you should have guarded or hidden it.
Despite her wildness, Naija is far from unintelligent. She has an eye for puzzles and attacks them with gusto. Kinesthetically intelligent and a visual thinker, she's usually the first to notice visual details. Having had to navigate treacherous currents most of her life, she rarely gets lost. She is ignorant in social issues though and rarely plans for the long term. However she excells at solving short term problems and thinks quickly under pressure.
Naija's inexperience with sociality sometimes makes her vulnerable to manipulation. False friends are especially a danger to her. Though she'll react negatively to anyone who overplays their hand, it's not difficult for a manipulator to convince her that they're friend. It might even be as simple as saying the words in a cheerful tone.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Physical mutations: Naija's body is adapted for underwater life. She has prominent gills on her neck, webbed fingers and large, fluked feet, and senses adapted to life underwater. Her ears are large and finned as well. Her teeth are sharp and she has small claws for fingernails. Her fingertips and palms are rough, enabling her to hold on to slippery fish. Her skin is green andexcessively smooth, and aside from the short cut on her head, she completely lacks hair. All of this means that she moves underwater with grace and speed and can continue swimming for lengths and speeds that dwarf olympians. Contrastingly, on land she becomes much less graceful. Her finned feet make walking a clumsy process. If precision isn't an issue she can move fairly quickly through a series of froglike hops using her powerful leg muscles. But, especially inside or in the city, she finds regular walking difficult. Her senses are less affected.
Power: Naija has the ability to induce and control vibration. This has several apperant and unapperant uses:
Song: Naija can produce a variety of sounds, on all parts of the audio spectrum, from those low enough to only be heard by
whales to sounds only made by dogs. While using this aspect of her power, she has trouble speaking at the same time, so
they're usually just notes and she has no ability to manipulate the notes sung by others. They're pretty though.
Blending: A mundane use of her power: if she concentrates on an object in her hand, she can vibrate it hard enough to turn
it into a slurry. This makes her a living equivalent of the most powerful commercial blenders and choppers. As a bonus,
if she vibrates the object/ingredient hard enough, it'll be steaming hot by the time she's done. This makes her able to
cook many dishes completely on the fly.
Echolocation: Useful for seeing in depths, Naija can bounce sound off of surfaces and tell where obstacles and large objects are. She can also send a low frequency pulse through a body, creating a crude map of their insides, making her effectively a living sonogram. This is cruder than a commercial sonogram, and so should only be medically used in an emergency.
Vibration projection: Naija can induce vibration in an an enemy with sufficient concentration. She must be able to see
this enemy and be no more than about twenty meters away from them. Naija can, at the moment, only access this ability with some difficulty, requiring a large amount of concentration.
Sharpness: When she learns finer control of her ability, Naija will be able to vibrate the edges of her claws and teeth, vastly increasing their cutting power.
Synchronization: If Naija vibrates at certain frequencies while in contact with someone, she can induce a kind of synchronization with her partner, the vibrations passing through them and back to her. They will be able to instinctively sense each other's movements, moods and impressions as long as they remain close. She is not yet aware that she can do this.
Growth inducement: Perhaps the most esoteric use of her power, when she has unlocked this ability she can induce growth in life forms by singing at them at certain frequencies. By selectively concentrating these vibrations, she can effectively control the growth rate of different parts of a body. This allows her to effectively shape an organism as it grows. On a more mundane level, she can make many kinds of plants bloom prematurely this way. This is a very advanced application of her ability and will not be available to her for some time.
All of these abilities work but less well outside of water.
AU HISTORY: Long ago, there was a little boy who went on an ocean voyage with his parents. A storm struck, and as often happens, the ship sank. His parents, and everyone else aboard, drowned. He did not. As he sank, his power awakened: the ability to create and shape life. When he hit the bottom, he was adapted to this new environment but utterly alone, unable to find his way towards shore or to undo the changes he had wrought in himself.
He mourned for some time. Then he decided he would use his gift to create companions for himself, ones who would not scorn his strange appearance, as the Atlanteans did. And so he did, creating powerful beings and whole civilizations from the creatures of the deep. But eventually each became dissatisfied with their anonymous, reclusive lord and each turned on him. The creator destroyed each of those civilizations, then exiled himself to deeper waters in his despair, leaving each to ruin and the depredations of the surface dwellers.
His final creation was named Mia, who he thought to make understand him by imbuing her with half of his gift. But she too became rebellious and abandoned him. She wished not to be his companion but his superior, as children often do. But like most such power struggles, this one is cyclical.
Thus Mia created Naija, with greater raw power but less precision than herself. She was to be her secret weapon against her own creator. Naija spent a strange childhood, a small observer to Mia's dealings with the powers of the deep: Atlanteans, underwater mutants, things that are too old for names or conventional classification. If any of them objected to the presence of the wide eyed, curious, fishlike child, they did not say it around the cold and powerful Mia.
And then, Mia wiped her memory. Never far off, she made sure to keep track of her 'daughter' as she grew. She grew up wild and seemingly alone, possessed of language but no knowledge of the world above the waves, only a few steps from the animals around her. But, as Mia predicted, she would not remain in the same place forever. Stirred by her natural curiosity and loneliness, Naija began venturing into new waters. As she'd been strategically abandoned in the right place for this, she began journeying into the ruins of the civilizations created by the enigmatic being known only as Aquarius. In each place, she began to discover new aspects to her powers and eventually she fought with the old beings of that place. From each, she learned more of the secret history of the deep.
Things got a little derailed when she met a diver, despite Mia's efforts to keep her insistently isolated. Li, a mutant himself, was fascinated by the amnesiac 'mermaid' he met. The two had a brief but passionate romance which ended tragically when one of Mia's engineered creatures managed to get through and poison him. Seemingly dead, she spirited him away, to use as a future bargaining chip, should Naija prove uncontrollable. Naija mourned, but like most wild things, she did not mourn long. She would gut whoever did that if she ever found out who, but otherwise did not dwell on it.
All this underwater mutant activity didn't escape Professor Xavier's notice. It was only technical considerations that kept them from investigating sooner. When the X-Men arrived, there was a brief battle with a shaded figure and its minions, grotesquely mutated sea-life. The figure escaped, but left behind a paralyzed Naija. She recovered within a few hours and the long process of filling Naija in on what's happening on the surface began.
